2019/20 Hynes Creates Program

Picture
All special grown-up and parent volunteers are invited to continue to be a part of this historic and visionary program, as we continue to be inspired by the efforts of all those who have contributed to its birth and life in years prior. Formerly known as the Picture Program, Hynes Creates shares a common mission to furnish our kids and volunteers with the opportunity to be a part of the learning experience and share a hands-on exposure to the arts.

Hynes Creates Mission:
We believe art and music can be crucial tools to ignite critical thinking and can help our youth learn through compassion and understanding of history and cultures around the world. Art is about sharing our experiences and enriching our lives. The program aims to invite everyone, our kids and volunteers, to grow curious, observe and question surroundings, develop confidence in their ideas, and to pursue their passions.
How it works:
First, as you may already know, you do not need to be an art expert to be a classroom volunteer for Hynes Creates. You can use one of the provided project rubrics with project descriptions/guidelines (files available in the PTA closet and HERE) OR you can completely design your own project. The project rubrics on the website will be limited to mostly visual arts, but remember, you can present any artistic expression you want. Some examples might be music, dance, performance, etc. The sky is the limit!
Basic structure of a lesson plan:
  • First, most volunteers choose to begin with either an age appropriate book, story or pictures which exemplify a specific artist, period or culture being taught. The Morton Grove Public Library is an excellent resource for this.
    Examples:
    Artist: Frida Kahlo Biography
    -- OR --
Period: a children’s book on Mexican Surrealism in general
    -- OR --
Culture: children’s book about the history of Mexican art.
  • Second, you will most likely do some form of demonstration to show the kids how to execute the project. If you are doing self-portraits with mirrors and paint, for example, you would do a short demonstration on how to make the painting. This shouldn’t take longer than 2 or 3 minutes.
  • Last, you will have the class do the project! This part is the most fun for everyone because the kids get so excited.

  • Check out another great resource website here!
Tips:
  • Be encouraging and ask them lots of questions about their decisions but try not to comment on the overall quality of their work.
  • The kids will be so excited to see you in their classroom! Even if you don’t think you executed the lesson plan perfectly, they won’t care. They will just be so happy to have you be a part of their day!
Sign up to Volunteer:
  • To help support streamlined communication with the Hynes teachers, we will be signing up volunteers for each classroom, for the months of October/November, January, February, March and April.
  • Volunteers are signing up for a classroom and month and then will reach out to the teacher to work together on a specific date and time that works for the teacher, classroom and parent. Our wonderful Hynes teachers work hard to balance days full of specials and rigorous curriculum and we hope you will be able to find a date/time that is ideal for everyone.
  • Once your sign-up has been confirmed, you will receive an email with instructions for reaching out to your teacher and setting up your program date and time.
